Kendrick v Drake Beef - A Rundown

Maia Williamson

Kendrick this, Drake that… confused about where this internet-dominating beef has come from, what it consists of, or what the &$%! is happening?

We got you.

Friends Once Upon A Time

Their relationship wasn’t always internet-breaking beef. Kendrick featured on Drake’s Take Care album, opened at his tour AND they collabed on Poetic Justice and F***in Problems. Seemingly mates. J.Cole even went as far as labeling him, Drake and Kendrick as the ‘Big Three’ in the song First Person Shooter. All good and well, you’d think…

The First Shot Fired

After years of sneak disses, the first big shot was fired from Kendrick on Future + Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You album. His lyrics consisted of “Yea get up with me, f**k sneak dissing." Continuing on with “Motherf***k the big three… it’s just big me."

Drake - What Do You Have To Say?

Drake’s official shot was fired back in the form of Push Ups, a direct diss track at Kendrick. Drake threw a few low blows, making fun of Kendrick’s height. He must have felt incredibly angry in the writing process, throwing shots at Rick Ross, The Weeknd, Metro Boomin, Future and more.

Drake doubled down on his fury, throwing a second diss track at Kendrick called Taylor Made Mistake. Interestingly, he used A.I voices of Tupac and Snoop on respective verses. However, the threat of a lawsuit quickly loomed from Tupac’s Estate, and the track was quickly removed.

HEAT CHECK KENDRICK!!!

Kendrick fired back with some absolute heat in the form of Euphoria - 6 minutes of pure venom. Drake was questioned on his fashion sense, hip-hop merits and much more. My personal favorite lines from the song were the directness of “It’s always been about love and hate, now let me say I’m the biggest hater. I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress, I hate the way that you sneak diss, if I catch flight, it’s gon be direct.”

No more than 3 days later, Kendrick deepened the wound with 6:16 in LA. He fired shots directly at OVO, Drake’s record label. “Have you ever thought that OVO was working for me?.. You must be a terrible person/Everyone inside your team is whispering that you deserve it/Can’t Toosie Slide up out of this one, it’s just gon’ resurface.” HEAT CHECKKKK!!

Family Matters - A Tune, But Does It Match?

Literally the same day, Drake released Family Matters, sniping at Kendrick for his alleged infidelity with fiancee Whitney Alford. Clearly, Drake is on a mission here, as he went on to diss A$AP Rocky, The Weeknd, Metro Boomin, Future and Rick Ross. This guy got ISSSSUESSSS man.

Kendrick Wastes No Time

You thought Drake was quick? Kendrick replied to Family Matters with Meet The Grahams within MINUTES. Kendrick went deeeeep with this track, calling Drake a deadbeat dad, and using a wild accusation that Drake is hiding ANOTHER kid from the world. He proceeded to also call out Drake’s alleged alcohol issues, gambling issues, lies about his son, ghost writers and cosmetic surgeries. “F** a rap battle, this is a lifelong battle with yourself.”

Kendrick was on a heater, releasing Not Like Us, once again throwing some WILD accusations at Drake - ones I probably shouldn’t speak about.

Drake, I Think You've Lost Mate

With wild accusations piled against Drake, he had to respond. The entire internet sat patiently waiting for his response, full well knowing that Kendrick was OWNING him at this point. His five-minute answer The Heart Part 6 debunked the daughter's allegations, claiming he fed fake intel to Kendrick. He accused Kendrick’s girlfriend of having a baby with another man. Whilst this was a courageous effort, it probably came a little too late, and wasn’t a robust enough answer to 3 fire tracks from Kendrick.

BBL DRIZZY!

I bet you can’t stop singing it either. This is an epic response from Metro Boomin, whom Drake called out in his track Push Ups, singing “Shut up and make some drums.” It is extremely catchy, living rent free in my mind (and probably yours), and taking TikTok by storm. Once TikTok has got a hold of it, it's game over.

Who wins... or is there more to come?

Public consensus is that Kendrick is winner winner chicken dinner. Not Like Us debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, and Euphoria peaked at No. 3. If that isn't proof in the pudding, not sure what is...

Is BBL Drizzy the ending of the beef - or will Drake answer? Keep your eyes and ears peeled.
